Jontay Porter of the Toronto Raptors might not see NBA burn time anytime soon-or the rest of his life-depending on how the investigation of his gambling scandal turns out.

The 6'10 forward is at the center of an NBA investigation involving betting irregularities in the past months.

Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the league is looking into Toronto games on January 26 and March 20, where Porter played, and the props betting involving the player.

Porter went undrafted in 2019 and spent the first four years of his professional career in the G-League. He joined the Raptors on a two-way contract in December last year.

He has played 26 games so far for the Raptors.

Jontay is the younger brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr.

What is prop betting?

Prop betting (proposition betting) is a type of side wager in which players place bets on parts of the game that do not affect the outcome.

In basketball, prop betting includes total points, assists, and rebounds. It may also be about the first to score a point, three points, or the length of the national anthem.

The games in question

As established above, Porter is not a star player who should attract much attention, even from gamblers.

The league is investigating Porter's games. On January 26, against the Los Angeles Clippers, the authorities saw increased props betting on Porter's name.

The ESPN report said an under props bet on him was set at 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. His name also had an over/under for made 3-pointers, which was 0.5.

He did not play significant minutes in the game. He did not score any points, grab three rebounds, or dish out one assist. He also made no three-point attempts.

This means that all the proposition bets in Under for Porter won.

DraftKings Sportsbook shared after the Clippers game that Porter's 3-pointers won the most money for bettors involving any NBA players.

This happened again on March 20 against the Sacramento Kings. He played only three minutes, and the prop bets on over/under set at around 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds were not fulfilled.

DraftKings SportsBooks again saw a massive win for bettors on Porter's over/under, labeling it as the no. 1 money maker of the night.

The ESPN report added, "A sportsbook industry source told ESPN that multiple betting accounts attempted to bet large amounts, upward of $10,000 and $20,000, on Porter unders in the January game against the Clippers."

"Betting limits on NBA player props vary by sportsbook and customer but are typically around $1,000 to $2,000."

Jontay Porter is yet to comment on the issue.

Game fixing is one of the most serious crimes in sports, and one could get a lifetime ban.

In 1961, Tony Jackson received a lifetime ban from the league while playing for the New York Knicks for his involvement in the NCAA University Division men's basketball gambling scandal.
