The league will disband the NBA G League Ignite team at the conclusion of the current season, which ends in April 2024.

Established by the NBA in 2020, the G League Ignite team serves as the developmental squad for select elite draft prospects and seasoned veterans.

The league introduced the Ignite program when no other American professional league offered a viable pathway for pre-draft-eligible players to receive substantial compensation for playing before entering the professional ranks.

However, a significant alteration in college basketball rules has made the team's presence unnecessary.

Due to the adoption of the name, image, and likeness (NIL) rule in 2021 and the introduction of the transfer portal in college basketball, the purpose of the NBA G League Ignite team has been diminished.

The NIL permits players to generate personal income while attending college and gaining NCAA experience after years of such practice being outlawed.

NBA G League Ignite produced several lottery picks

Ten players from Ignite have been selected in NBA drafts, four of them in the top 10 picks.

Among these notable selections were Jalen Green of the Houston Rockets, Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors, Dyson Daniels of the New Orleans Pelicans, and Scoot Henderson of the Portland Trail Blazers.

The upcoming 2024 NBA Draft is anticipated to increase the count of players drafted from the Ignite program for the last time.
