The Michigan Wolverines are gearing up to face off against the Washington Huskies in the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship Game, scheduled for Monday, January 8, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Entering this season's College Football Playoff as the top-seeded team, the Wolverines faced a fierce battle against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Rose Bowl semifinal.

After a hard-fought contest, they emerged victorious with a 27-20 overtime win, securing their place in the championship game. The Wolverines are aiming to secure their first national football championship since 1997.

Despite their outstanding on-field performance, including an undefeated 14-0 record thus far, the Wolverines have faced a series of off-field challenges.

The program went under scrutiny due to allegations of sign stealing, prompting an NCAA investigation. Moreover, head coach Jim Harbaugh has been notably absent for a considerable part of this season, serving suspensions that have caused him to miss nearly half of the team's games.

Nevertheless, the team's collective strength is indisputable, positioning them as strong contenders for the national championship for various compelling reasons. In fact, they are favored to take home the title through various betting odds.

3 Reasons Wolverines Will Beat Washington in National Championship Game:

1. Michigan's phenomenal defense

Michigan's defense has been particularly formidable, tallying 16 sacks in their last four games, including 10 in their most recent two outings.

The Wolverines' defensive prowess was prominently showcased once more in the Rose Bowl, holding Alabama to a season-low 288 yards.

Michigan's defense relentlessly pressured Crimson Tide QB Jalen Milroe, tallying six sacks, with four occurring in the first half alone. The Wolverines sealed the win by stopping Milroe at the 2-yard line on a decisive fourth-and-goal play.

Their defensive unit entered the College Football Playoff ranked No. 1 nationally in total defense.

2. Michigan's experience

Several veterans remain on the team, providing valuable experience and leadership. This group includes offensive tackle Karsen Barnhart, offensive linesman Trente Jones, defensive back Makari Paige and running backs Blake Corum, and Donovan Edwards.

The Wolverines also stand alone among last year's four College Football Playoff contenders in retaining their starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy, providing continuity and stability.

3. JJ McCarthy

Wolverines quarterback JJ McCarthy has received high praise from head coach Jim Harbaugh, who deems him the greatest signal-caller in the school's illustrious history.

This sentiment is echoed by alumni Tom Brady, who is widely recognized as the greatest quarterback in NFL history.

McCarthy's performance at Michigan speaks volumes. As the starting quarterback, he has suffered only one defeat in two seasons, which occurred in the College Football Playoff semifinal against TCU last season.

The 20-year-old consistently finds ways to contribute to his team's victories, and he only needs one more to elevate his already solid legacy.
