Manchester United has stripped center-back Harry Maguire of his captaincy duties for the world-famous club.

Team manager Erik Ten Hag privately outlined to Maguire his reasons for changing leadership in the team.

The 30-year-old wrote on social media that he was extremely disappointed but will continue giving his all whenever he wears the iconic red shirt.

Maguire assumed the captaincy in January 2020 after the departure of Ashley Young, five months after he arrived at the club from Leicester City.

United paid a record $104 million transfer fee to Leicester to acquire Maguire in August 2019, making him the most expensive defender in the world.

As captain, he has lifted the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League and the 2022-23 Carabao Cup for Manchester United.

The club released a statement thanking Maguire for his contribution as captain over the past three and a half years. Ten Hag will announce the new captain soon after briefing the players.

Harry Maguire linked to West Ham move

On the same day, when it was announced that Maguire would not be wearing United's captain armband anymore, rumors of a potential move to West Ham United intensified.

Maguire has dropped to third choice among United's center-backs after Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, jeopardizing his future with the club. His contract in Manchester runs until 2025.

West Ham is looking to bolster their roster after selling their captain, defensive midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal for a British record fee of $127 million.
