It was fun while it lasted. Tim Tebow's dream NFL return ended abruptly after the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to release the former Heisman Trophy winner on Tuesday as part of the team's first-round roster cuts.

Shortly after the announcement was made, Tebow posted a message on Twitter to thank the Jaguars for allowing him to live his NFL dream once more. Tebow said he "never wanted to make decisions out of fear of failure" and that he was "grateful for the chance to have pursued a dream."

Tebow thanks Jaguars organization for NFL chance

Tebow concluded his message by saying, "Thank you to the Jaguars organization and everyone who has supported me in this journey. And we know that ... God works all things together for good. Romans 8:28."

Tebow's stint with the Jaguars has been a hot topic in the NFL ever since he signed a one-year contract with Jacksonville on May 20. Head coach Urban Meyer gave his former player in Florida a chance to return to the NFL not as a quarterback but as a tight end.

However, Tebow's inexperience with the tight end position proved too much to overcome, costing him a spot in the Jaguars lineup in the end. Meyer acknowledged that fact, saying the main reason why Tebow was cut was his inability to block defenders.

Football fans got to see that first hand when the Jaguars squared off with the Cleveland Browns last Saturday for their preseason opener. Videos of Tim Tebow's poor blocking attempts in that game went viral on social media as Cleveland defenders made mincemeat of his non-existent protection.

Tebow played a total of 16 snaps in their 23-13 loss to the Browns and was targeted just once. He didn't play a single special teams snap, though, in that contest showing the lack of trust the coaching staff had with Tebow's skill set. Meyer made that point, saying, "if he can't contribute on special teams that's a tough go."

Another sad ending to Tebow's NFL career

Tebow's career in the NFL hasn't blossomed the way he wanted after making waves as a quarterback in college. Tebow arrived in the NFL to much fanfare after winning the Heisman in 2007 and leading the Florida Gators to the national championship in 2008.

He was drafted 25th overall by Denver in 2010 and started both of the Broncos' playoff games in 2011, including a memorable overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wildcard Game. That proved to be the highlight of Tebow's NFL career as his stock plummeted right after due to his erratic throwing form.

He had short stints with the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Philadelphia Eagles but didn't get meaningful playing time with those three teams. Tebow decided to try his luck in professional baseball in 2016, signing a minor league deal with the Mets organization, which lasted four seasons.
