John Cena has been the face of the WWE for more than a decade and his time at the top is coming to an end very soon. Roman Reigns is expected to replace Cena as the top superstar of the WWE very soon as the company prepares for big changes after WrestleMania 33.
According to Cageside Seats, the WWE has been planning to make Roman Reigns the face of the company for almost three years but it has failed. His match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 31 was supposed to be his crowning moment but the WWE changed their minds due to the fans' reaction.
Seth Rollins ended up cashing in his Money in the Bank title shot and ended WrestleMania 31 as champion. WrestleMania 32 was no different as Roman Reigns faced off with Triple H for the WWE title. However, the match was a stinker and "The Guy" did not go over the Dallas crowd.
But this year is a different story as Roman Reigns will go one-on-one with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33. There is a talk of turning Reigns heel for the match and it could be very helpful for his career. The change in character will make Reigns an even better performer when he replaces John Cena.
Roman Reigns beating The Undertaker is a big step towards the future for the WWE even though a lot of hardcore fans do not like the idea. "The Big Dog" getting the win will setup a showdown and rematch with Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34, per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
"The plan is to once again build for a year and have the big coronation at WrestleMania. The idea between now and then is for Reigns to be the face, not just when he wins the title, but to fully replace John Cena as the lead babyface of the company," Meltzer reported.
Roman Reigns defeating Brock Lesnar is a really good way to put him over as the next face of the company. "The Guy" retired The Undertaker then beat the baddest man in the WWE in two straight years have a lot of appeal. The WWE then can proceed to make Reigns vs. Cena before the latter becomes a full-time Hollywood actor.
