The Minnesota Vikings are going to part ways with Adrian Peterson after declining to pick up his option for the 2017 NFL season. The latest NFL rumors have linked Peterson to the Dallas Cowboys. However, should the Cowboys sign the veteran running back?
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is interested in signing Adrian Peterson this offseason. The billionaire reportedly wants to the 31-year-old RB to be the backup for super rookie Ezekiel Elliott.
The Cowboys is a perfect fit for Adrian Peterson in terms of offense because of the team's great offensive line of Travis Frederick, Zach Martin and Tyron Smith, per Will Brinson of CBS Sports. The 2012 NFL MVP is also from Texas so it makes sense that he comes home in the final years of his career.
However, Brinson pointed out that the Cowboys have to make up their mind regarding Tony Romo to free up some cap space. Also, Adrian Peterson might not want to play as a backup to a second-year player even if the Cowboys are a contender.
Despite the NFL rumors of Jones interested in signing Peterson, a source told Jon Machota of Dallas Morning News that the Cowboys are no longer going after the veteran RB. It is noted that the Cowboys wants to give Elliott more touches next season and he cannot do it if he's playing alongside Adrian Peterson.
Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones also told Machota that the team is not looking to sign big name free agents this offseason. He added that the team is looking to build the team through the draft rather free agency.
"Not a huge fan of having to go out and pay guys a lot of money, filling in big needs through unrestricted free agency. We'd rather build through the draft and then pay our own players," Stephen said.
The Cowboy should not sign Peterson and set their sights on re-signing players such as Morris Claiborne, Barry Church and Ronald Leary. They also need a defensive end, a wide receiver, a cornerback and make a decision regarding their backup quarterbacks.
