UFC has confirmed that Jose Aldo will be defending his featherweight title against Max Holloway at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on June 3. The featherweight champion was upgraded to the champion status after the UFC stripped Conor McGregor the championship. Although the venue has not been confirmed yet but it is most likely to take place at HSBC Arena, which was the host for UFC 190, UFC 163, UFC 153, UFC 142 and UFC 142.
The main event for the featherweight championship, Max Halloway (17-3 MMA, 13-3 UFC) will take on the featherweight champ Jose Aldo (26-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC). In the latest ranking of USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie MMA featherweight ranking, Aldo is ranked No.1 and right behind him is Holloway on No.2.
This fight will be almost after a year for Aldo who fought last to defend his title against Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 in the year 2015 as reported by metro. While Holloway will enter this fight after a convincing victory over Anthony Pettis at UFC 206.
Aldo was the UFC's only featherweight champion along with the WEC. But McGregor knocked him out at UFC 194 in December 2015. Aldo was knocked out in just 13 seconds in this match where else before that the Brazilian was undefeated in last 10 years as reported in MMA Junkie.
After this lost to McGregor, Aldo won his interim belt against Frankie Edgar at UFC 200. Then in November McGregor won the lightweight title and became a two-division champion. Just after two months, UFC stripped McGregor from his featherweight belt and two weeks later Aldo was promoted as champion again.
Holloway lost to McGregor too after his 10 straight wins in August 2013. He had seven stoppages and three fight-night bonuses during his run.
"Aldo is going to fight Holloway,' UFC president Dana White told ESPN on Sunday. 'That fight's done, too. I don't remember what date it's on for, but yeah it's done. It's a done deal. We got that fight done last week."
