Founder And CEO Of Saygus Chad Sayers Talks About The Company’s Troublesome Period

It has been almost 18 months since anything was written or updated about Saygus. Many forgot about Saygus and they can't be blamed for it, Saygus is an American manufacturer of smartphones headquartered in South Jordan, Utah. founded by Chad Sayers.

The company was all at buzz two years ago at the CES, it had earned an innovation award and its smartphone proposition at that time was very promising and glorifying. The Saygus V2 was almost everything any enthusiast would want, top spec SnapDragon 801, front facing speakers, high-resolution cameras and premium build with real buttons. All things were in place, company got pre-orders post CES.

Then, nothing happened after an exciting coverage, the order process wasn't the best but it has to be said the process wasn't that disastrous. Order receipts went out and customers were waiting and kept waiting. A short while later, the company updated that shipping dates are being extended, this was understandable as the company was new and good products was needed in order to compete with the ever-growing market.

However, shipping got pushed again and again, until autumn of 2015. So, the persistence got no reward and the customers started to get away.

Chad was asked as to when he got really fed up and started losing hope in the process, his reply was very frank, he says his company failed, however he and his team have learnt a lot from this failure. His biggest concern at the time was to get the radios right.

Saygus had to switch ODM (original design manufacturer) partners a couple of times, ultimately they lined up a small in-house team to make things happen. That process just added time to the project since it required being able to develop proficiency in the manufacturing process.

Other challenges stemmed from the UI, a thin layer over Android, but that was just stomping bugs. Apparently, combining a smartphone to accommodate a second microSD card reader presented a new set of challenges.

So, these challenges in addition to other few have made it difficult. Chad expects to comeback and re-sell, but will the customers pre-order the phones and rely on a small company like they did last time? A question that needs a review from the CEO.
