Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has been medically cleared to play and is expected to start Sunday's key NFC North game against Detroit.
According to ESPN. coach Marc Trestman is weighing whether to start Cutler or backup Josh McCown, who led the team to a surprising 27-20 road win against Green Bay last Monday night. Cutler returned to the practice field on Thursday, nearly three weeks ahead of his initial prognosis for a torn groin muscle suffered during an Oct. 20 game against Washington Redskins.
"Jay has spent, since the day he got hurt, really 24/7 doing everything he can on and off the field to get ready," Trestman told ESPN, adding that Cutler "took every rep" in practice.
Trestman later added "Jay is unique regarding he really understands his body. He understands how to take care of himself, and he's a unique athlete. There was an incredible amount of hard work and effort that he had put in to even have a chance. We're excited about it. It says a lot about his commitment to the team. He came in this morning, did a few of the things. The doctors said, 'You're good to go.'
The Bears, Lions and Packers are all tied atop the NFC North at 5-3.
