The mayor of Oklahoma City believes Kevin Durant has made a huge mistake.
Durant revealed Monday that he intends to sign with Golden State, a contract that multiple sources have confirmed will be a two-year, Oklahoma City mayor Mick Cornett has reacted to the signing and believes that the former Thunder star received some bad advice.
"Nothing in this is Kevin's fault," Cornett, who used to be a sports anchor, told TMZ Sports.
"My only observation is ... I think he may have gotten bad advice and I suspect it won't work out. Now, I could be wrong but that's what it feels like to me. I think he got bad advice."
Durant released a statement on Monday via the Players' Tribune in which he made his decision.
"The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player -- as that has always steered me in the right direction," Durant wrote. "But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth."
Durant, 27, has spent his entire nine-year career with the Thunder after being drafted in the second round by them back when they were the SuperSonics based in Seattle.
The 2014 MVP and seven-time All-Star has averaged 27.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game throughout his career and helped lead the team to within one game of the NBA Finals this past season.
Though Cornett is heartbroken to see the superstar move on, he called Durant a "model citizen" for his chartable work.
"He gave generously of his time to our non-profit, and also gave generously to funding some disaster relief and some other things," he said. "You cannot look at anything he did here and say it was anything but positive."
