The battle of Brandons stopped in the Bears' neck of the woods.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall has put an end to what was a quickly escalating feud between Marshall and Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather.
Meriweather went on the offensive earlier Monday for comments Marshall originally said regarding two penalties Meriweather incurred for illegal hits during the Redskins' 45-41 victory over the Bears on Oct. 20.
Meriweather responded by denouncing Marshall for his history of domestic violence.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Marshall was on ESPN Radio 1000-AM in Chicago and Marshall declined to address Meriweather's comments about his past. He said he communicated with Meriweather last week, but they "were on two different pages."
"I just want to see the health of the league get better and for guys to stay healthy," Marshall said. "For guys like that, I'm just going to pray for them."
Marshall, who was the target of one of Meriweather's hits during the Redskins-Bears game, complained about Meriweather's playing style after the game, according to NFL.com.
"Guys like that really don't understand that there is life after football," Marshall said, per the Chicago Tribune. "I respect the league trying to better our game and guys like that, maybe he needs to get suspended or taken out of the game completely. I understand. I get it. I was one of those guys. I played defense growing up. I was a headhunter. Even sometimes on the offensive side, I played that way. But with rules in place, you've gotta respect it."
Those comments drew the ire of Meriweather, who fired back Monday.
"He feels like I need to be kicked out of the league? I feel like people who beat their girlfriends should be kicked out, too," Meriweather told Washington media, according to The Washington Times. "You tell me who you'd rather have: Somebody who plays aggressive on the field, or somebody who beat up their girlfriend?"
In 2007, Marshall was arrested in a Denver suburb on suspicion of domestic violence, according to the Chicago Tribune. Longtime girlfriend Rasheedah Watley reported Marshall prevented a taxi she was in from leaving his house. Marshall completed anger management counseling and the charges were dropped two months later.
The Denver Post reported two other incidents in June of 2007. No charges were filed in either incident.
