Now that Johnny Football's time in Cleveland is up, the Browns are preparing to move forward.
Cleveland released embattled quarterback Johnny Manziel on Mar. 11 after several off-field incidents.
The troubles the signal caller found himself in range from demons with alcohol to an alleged domestic violence incident in which his ex-girlfriend, model Colleen Crowley, claims the quarterback struck her multiple times. The case is headed to a grand jury.
With the former Heisman Trophy winner now out of the picture, it's time for the Browns to look ahead to the 2016 season. Though they've been a part of trade rumors involving embattled 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the team is now looking toward Robert Griffin III as Manziel's successor under new head coach Hue Jackson.
Browns Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown revealed the club is "moving forward" on possibly signing Griffin, though no deal is imminent, according to Cleveland.com. Brown also suggested that the team is doing its "due diligence" on the signal caller.
As for their interest in Kaepernick, Brown downplayed that the team was ever a major player for the quarterback, adding, "at this point we don't anticipate being engaged with San Francisco."
Griffin burst onto the scene with the Redskins in 2012, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year that season, but he has struggled to stay healthy and lost his job to Kirk Cousins last season, falling to third string behind Colt McCoy. Washington ultimately released Griffin on Mar. 7 after leaving him as inactive for the entire 2015 season.
As for Manziel, he is constantly spotted partying despite the issues of his personal and professional life. On Friday, the former quarterback's private jet landed in Miami, likely for some more partying, according to TMZ.
It's hard to see another NFL team taking a chance on Manziel at least until he proves he can handle himself like a professional or until his legal case plays out.
Griffin isn't a sure-thing anymore, but the Browns at least seem prepared to give him a shot at turning around a franchise that hasn't made the playoffs since 2002.
