San Francisco 49ers Rumors: Team Leaning Toward Retaining Colin Kaepernick [VIDEO]

On one hand, the absence of trade rumors for Colin Kaepernick bodes well for his immediate future in San Francisco.

On the other hand, everyone knows the financial risk the 49ers will have to take if he's still on their roster on April 1.

As such, the 49ers, including Kelly, will meet with Kaepernick's representatives this week in Indianapolis, the Sacramento Bee is reporting.

What seems like a perfect marriage between Kaepernick and new head coach Chip Kelly has been on hold because of Kaepernick's recovery from three surgeries and his soured relationship with San Francisco management.

"The 49ers consistently have said the April 1 deadline is inconsequential and their main concern is Kaepernick recovering from the three surgeries (left shoulder, left knee, right thumb) he has had since November," the Bee reported. "There hasn't been a buzz about a trade to this point, an indication the 49ers have not yet surveyed potential trade partners and might suggest new coach Chip Kelly prefers to retain Kaepernick."

Another indication that Kaepernick's relationship with San Francisco isn't irreparable is that Kelly had Kaepernick have spoken on the phone since their brief meeting at the team facility in Santa Clara last month, the Bee added.

One report recently surfaced that Kaepernick expressed an interest in joining the New York Jets, in part because girlfriend Nessa Diab resides in New York.

The 49ers are wise not to throw away the relationship with Kaepernick. Despite his poor performance over the last two seasons, he also has shown the ability to lead the franchise to the Super Bowl.

And in Kaepernick, Kelly will have found what pundits believe to be the best quarterback fit for his scheme since he moved to the NFL as head coach of the Eagles in 2013.

The best part of the discussions will be that both sides stand to gain. The 49ers could renegotiate his contract for a lower base salary but concede more guaranteed money than what he has now, which is nothing.
