Colin Kapernick Update: 49ers Coach Jim Tomsula 'Excited' About Benched QB's Future [VIDEO]

Currently, it's difficult to see any optimism about Colin Kaepernick's future.

But 49ers coach Jim Tomsula accentuated the positive for Kaepernick even though he was proclaimed the backup next week to Blaine Gabbert for San Francisco's game against the Seahawks, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Possible Landing Spots For Colin Kaepernick In 2016

Kaepernick wasn't even given the chance during the 49ers' bye week to win his job back. Gabbert engineered San Francisco's 17-16 upset of the Falcons last week in his first appearance as the starting quarterback.

"Obviously I'm excited for Blaine and very excited for the opportunity he had and he's going to have again," Tomsula said earlier this week on KNBR 680-AM, according to the Mercury News. "And I'm also very excited for Colin Kaepernick, as he moves on here and keeps rolling and the future for him. As a coach, you want nothing but the best for all your players."

According to most media speculation, Kaepernick's future in San Francisco is sure to end before April 1, 2016, when his salary for next season becomes fully guaranteed. The 49ers aren't required to pay Kaepernick a penny of the remaining money left on the seven-year, $126 million contract he signed before the start of the 2014 season.

Tomsula did say that Kaepernick has shown the proper attitude about his situation.

"Colin has handled himself just unbelievably, OK?" Tomsula. "People know how I feel about Colin Kaepernick and how much I think of him.

"I do believe in the person. He's handled himself just awesome here and with his teammates. That part of it you couldn't ask for any better."

Tomsula refused to compare Gabbert to Kaepernick, and he defended his action of delaying his announcement that Gabbert would remain the starter to the media until everyone inside the organization knew of the situation.

The 49ers coach deserves to be commended on both those points, but he might want to rethink using the adjective "excited" in describing Kaepernick's situation while he's on the bench.
