The Colts, without star quarterback Andrew Luck for 2-6 weeks following a lacerated kidney and partially torn abdominal muscle, are desperate for aid at QB. In fact, they are desperate enough to turn to retired veteran Jason Campbell as a backup.
Campbell, who has thrown 87 touchdowns against 60 picks over the course of a nine-year career with five teams, last played for the Bengals in 2014. He was 11-of-19 for 74 yards. The reason Campbell is high on Indianapolis’ call list is his familiarity with offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who replaced Pep Hamilton last week.

Campbell played for Chudzinski in 2013 in Chudzinski’s lone season coaching the Browns. Campbell was 1-7 in eight starts, but threw more touchdowns (11) than interceptions (eight), and averaged 223.9 yards per game.
He would be backing up Matt Hasselbeck, who has started twice this season in relief of Luck, going 2-0 vs. the Jaguars and Texans with three touchdowns and zero picks. The Colts’ current backup is Alex Tanney, who has been in the league since 2012 but has not thrown an NFL pass. Tanney has been on five teams.

The Colts are 4-5, but in first place in the AFC South. They are one game ahead of the Texans (3-5) in the win column, but are on by this week. If Houston upsets Cincinnati on Monday Night Football, they will be tied for the division lead. The bye week would allow Campbell a chance to refresh his memory with a crash course on Chudzinski’s scheme before they travel to Atlanta to play the Falcons.
Whether Tanney or Campbell backs up Hasselbeck, head coach Chuck Pagano is hoping Luck heals up on the short end of that 2-6 week timetable.
