Boston Red Sox Rumors: Clay Buchholz Trade Key To Land Zack Greinke, David Price [VIDEO]

The Red Sox have picked up Clay Buchholz’s $13 million option for 2016.

It just won’t guarantee his future in Boston.

“Buchholz’s name is already rolling off the lips of some mid- to small-market teams who believe they could trade for him if the Red Sox have bigger fish to fry in pursuit of a true ace who can stay healthy,” Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wrote.

Bigger fish in the form of Johnny Cueto, David Price and Zack Greinke?

David Price Proves He's Not Worth The Money

Despite Greinke’s impressive season -- finishing 19-3 with a 1.66 ERA -- not everyone is sold on the idea.

Price has already enjoyed tenures with the Rays and Blue Jays. A stint with the Red Sox would be his third in the AL East, transforming him into the Jackie Burkhart of MLB, slowly working his way to every eligible franchise in the division.

Of the three big-named free agents, Cueto seems to be the likely target. He’s the only one previously linked with the Red Sox.

A major league source told Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald that Boston was already considering making a serious push for the right-hander.

All this speculation holds no weight, however, until Clay Buchholz’s injury-prone arm is no longer a part of the rotation.
