Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Hakeem Nicks Among Veterans Working Out To Replace Dez Bryant [VIDEO]

The Cowboys got some bad news today about injured wide receiver Dez Bryant. The broken bone he suffered Sunday night vs. the Giants may take eight to 12 weeks for him to recover, as opposed to the original four to six weeks timetable. In light of that, Dallas is trotting in a slew of veteran free agent receivers to add to the depleted pass-catching crew.

Hakeem Nicks, Austin Pettis, Nick Toon and Clyde Gates are all working out for the Cowboys, but Nicks stands out among those four candidates. Nicks has never been the same since suffering a similar broken bone in his foot, but the 27-year-old ex-Giant once finished in the top-5 in receiving touchdowns (11 in 2010), and posted back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons in 2010 and 2011.

3 Solid Fantasy Replacements For Dez Bryant

Nicks most recently played for the Colts, where he grabbed 38 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns last season. Nicks made six starts. He had his foot procedure after the 2011 campaign, and hasn’t reached 1,000 yards since. A similar injury also derailed the season of former NBA MVP Kevin Durant last year, limiting him to just 27 games.

Bryant is optimistic about the initial timetable.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also seems resigned to missing his star wideout for a lengthy period of time. "I guess I've been in football since I was 5 years old, and so I've always known you never get the hand to play with that you've got on paper and you're always making adjustments," Jones said. "To get to where we want to go, we're going to have to be making them."
