Last week, Michael Sam made news when he proposed to partner Vito Cammisano - a photo of Sam down on one knee posted on his Twitter account.
Where Sam proposed is sure to create more reaction.
TMZ Sports reported that Sam asked Cammisano to marry him when the two were inside the Vatican - inside St. Peter's Basilica.
"It's sort of an act of defiance ... considering the Catholic church is still anti-gay marriage," TMZ Sports reported.
Michael Sam story didn't encourage any other gay NFL player to come out of the closet
It was Sam and Cammisano who created a minor firestorm with their kiss following Sam's selection in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft.
The St. Louis Rams selected the defensive lineman and SEC Defensive Player of the Year, making him the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL. The Rams waived him before the season started. The Dallas Cowboys claimed Sam off waivers before releasing him, too, on Oct. 21, 2014.
Sam recently did an interview with Oprah, in which he said multiple NFL gay players reached out to him, expressing their gratitude for his bravery in coming out. He would not reveal how many players reached out to him and added he would never "out" any other player.
Sam also talked about the torment he received as a child from his brothers, saying they abused him daily.
He denied that his draft-day kiss with Cammisano was not staged, as some critics asserted. The two also were criticized when Sam playfully smeared cake in Cammisano's face.
St. Louis Rams defensive end Ethan Westbrooks, an undrafted free agent out of West Texas A&M who beat out Sam for a roster spot on the team, told TMZ that he believes Sam belongs in the NFL.
