Cleveland Browns Rumors: Mike Pettine Says Team Had No Plans to Draft Blake Bortles at No. 4 Overall [VIDEO]

The Cleveland Browns will face the Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend and the game has the media curious about what could have been in Cleveland.

Browns head coach Mike Pettine spoke to WKRK-FM on Wednesday and among the questions asked was whether the team considered selecting Jaguars rookie quarterback Blake Bortles with the fourth overall pick.

"There wasn't any quarterback in the discussion for us at four, but we certainly had a first-round grade on him," coach Mike Pettine said.

Pettine told the media on a different occasion that the team was leaning toward Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins if they had kept the pick, but they traded it away to the Buffalo Bills. The Bills drafted Watkins and the Browns dropped back to No. 9 overall, then traded up to No. 8 to draft corner Justin Gilbert.

Bortles was drafted by the Jaguars with the third overall pick.

Browns’ quarterback Brian Hoyer has been one of the pleasant surprises of the NFL season and has the Browns at 3-2 with three upcoming games against the Jaguars, Raiders and Buccaneers.

Bortles will make his fifth career start for the Jaguars this weekend after the team planned to sit the Central Florida product the entire 2014 season.
