Tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET the Philadelphia Eagles (0-1) will head to New England to take on the Patriots (0-1) in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Both teams appeared flat in Week 1 of the postseason, but neither gave their veterans and starters much run. For the Pats, Tom Brady didn't even see the field as head coach Bill Belichick went with veteran backup Ryan Mallett to start before giving way to 2014 pick Jimmy Garoppolo.
The Patriots might have been showcasing Mallett for a potential trade, but his 5-of-12, 55-yard performance left much to be desired. Garoppolo, on the other hand, looked sharp by completing 9-of-13 passes for 157 yards and a score.
After the game Belichick was very unhappy with New England's performance, despite the stakes being so low in the early preseason stages.
"I didn't think really we did very many things the way we wanted to do them tonight," Belichick said. "We just weren't very good in any phase of the game. We had the ball on the ground. Didn't play well enough on defense. Didn't move the ball, were in too many long-yardage situations. Not good enough in the kicking game. So just overall, we've got a lot of work to do."
The Eagles have much work to do as well. After releasing DeSean Jackson this offseason, quarterback Nick Foles showed that the rapport between he and his receivers has to get better. Foles completed 6-of-9 passes, but tossed two interceptions and no touchdowns.
"We can't have the errors that we had to start the game on offense, whether it be the interceptions or the penalties," Foles said. "What preseason allows is an opportunity to clean it up. That's what we'll do as a team. We'll clean it up and we'll move forward."
