In the women’s draw of the 2014 ATP Western & Southern Open, the top ladies get their first taste of action in Cincinnati. (1) Serena Williams starts her bid for another tournament victory as she faces Samantha Stosur of Australia in her first tilt.
Williams is right back in the thick of the action after losing to sister Venus in the Coupe Rogers presented by Banque Nationale on Sunday. Serena won’t have to worry about Venus in this tournament as she was eliminated in the opening round by (16) Lucie Safarova.
Venus spoke about the loss and said that the short week after a long tournament run could have aided in her fatigue.
"I wish I could have felt today like I did in Montreal, just to make it more competitive," Williams said.
"Yeah, it was definitely a quick turnaround," she said. "Maybe it would have been a little better to play a little later in the day. But I think she just played so well. No matter what shot I hit, she hit a winner.”
2) Simona Halep, (5) Maria Sharapova and (12) Caroline Wozniacki have already advanced to the tournaments third round and await the rest of the group.
