Vincenzo Nibali of team Astana leads the way after 16 stages and two rest days as the rest of the pack looks to gain some ground. Alejandro Valverde of Movistar and Thiabaut Pinot of FDJ.fr trail Nibali by a large margin of more than four and a half minutes.

Stage 17 is one of the shorter stages in all the tour at only 124.5 kilometers. According to Velohuman, this stage contains many climbs in the short distance that will really test the remaining cyclists.

"The steak knife-esque profile throws three Category 1 climbs (the second one is particularly brutal, 13.2 km at a 7% gradient) and some tricky descents at the peloton before culiminating in an HC-rated finale, a 10.2 kilometer, 8.3% ascent to Pla d’Adet. The early slopes of this last climb are particularly harsh, with sections hovering around 10%. "

If the cyclists are to catch Nibali, they will have to knock him out of his comfort zone. There is very limited time for the other racers to challenge Nibali and take the yellow jersey from him before stage 21. With a four and a half minute lead, Nibali has established himself as the top player of the championship, but anything can happen in the final stages.
