Tonight at 8:10 p.m. ET, the Washington Nationals (39-35) and Milwaukee Brewers (47-30) take the field at Miller Park in Milwaukee for the opener of a three-game set. Washington embarks on a seven-game road trip after going 4-2 on a six-game homestand while Milwaukee returns home for a seven-game home slate after going 6-1 on a seven-game road swing through Arizona and Colorado and is looking for its fifth straight victory.
The Nationals leads the National League East while the Brewers are atop the NL Central heading into tonight.
Gio Gonzalez (3-4, 4.85 ERA) takes the mound for the Nationals while the Brewers counter with Matt Garza, who is 4-4 with a 4.02 ERA thus far.
Gonzalez starts just his second game after a disabled list stint with shoulder inflammation and is coming off of a no-decision against the Houston Astros where he yielded four runs in the fourth inning.
"I felt like it was not one of my strongest outings, but it was a step in the right direction," Gonzalez said via MLB.com. "I'm off the DL is a great sign."
Garza has had five straight quality starts for Milwaukee heading into tonight. The Brewers have played 15 of their last 18 games on the road and will be happy to be back at Miller Park.
"We've been playing well on the road, but you're always looking forward to go home," said Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez, according to MLB.com. "We just finished a great road trip now I'm looking forward to a great homestand."
Ramirez, who has had some tightness in his back, is hitting .297 with 10 homers and 38 RBI thus far this season.
Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy ranks second in the National League with a .331 average while Carlos Gomez ranks tied for fourth (.317) and is riding an 18-game hitting streak into the contest. Lucroy also ranks second in the NL in doubles (26) and third in hits (91) while Gomez is fourth in the NL in total bases (148) and slugging percentage (.532). Gomez leads the Brewers with 40 RBI.
Milwaukee closer Francisco Rodriguez leads the MLB with 25 saves thus far this season while outfielder Khris Davis is hitting .260 with a team-best 13 homers and has added 38 RBI.
Nationals outfielder Denard Span is tied for third in the NL with five triples and is in sole possession of fourth place with 23 doubles while first baseman Adam LaRoche is third with a .418 on-base percentage and leads the team among qualifiers with a .305 batting average.
Washington shortstop Ian Desmond paces the team with 14 homers and 45 RBI, but is hitting just .231 on the campaign.
The Nationals and Brewers kick off a three-game set tonight when they do battle at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
