When Adonis Stevenson abruptly dropped HBO in favor of Showtime, hopes of a Sergey Kovalev fight went out the window. A door to a Bernard Hopkins fight opened, however, as long as Stevenson takes care of business this weekend vs. Andrzej Fonfara.
"Superman" Stevenson doesn't appear worried at all about the 36-year-old Fonfara, and expects to dispatch him via knockout as he has done to 20 of his 23 conquests. Fonfara's no household name, but he enters with a 25-2-0 record with 15 knockouts, and Stevenson's recent comments make it seem as if he is unprepared for the bout.
"I don't know what his style is. I'm going for the knockout. Knockouts sell. I want to knock him out. I don't have a game plan or this or that," Stevenson said.
Perhaps realizing how a quote like that sounds, he assured those on a conference call that he is in fact focused on the task at hand and not a future date with B-Hop. "I'm very focused on Fonfara. I'm not overlooking him. I know that he's waiting and that he's training for this fight.
"I go one fight at a time... I'm going to get into the ring and I'm going to knock him out. I'm prepared for this fight, so I'm not thinking about losing or if I lose. I'm here, I'm a champion, and I'm going to end this by knockout. I'm not concerned about that. I'm ready to fight."
None of Stevenson's past 10 fights have gone the distance, so he may have reason to feel confident, but Fonfara's made clear he thinks hubris is getting the better of his highly touted opponent. "Adonis is thinking about what will happen with his next fight. I am thinking about what will happen now, on May 24, and I'm ready for this fight," Fonfara said.
Fonfara's two biggest wins are a 2013 victory over Gabriel Campillo, and a 2012 win vs. Glen Johnson. His last defeat came all the way in 2008, a Round 2 KO loss to Derrick Findley.
