D'Angelo Harrison Suspended: St. John's Guard Out for Rest of Season

D'Angelo Harrison, a guard for the St. John's Red Storm and the third-leading scorer in the Big East, was suspended for the rest of the season on Friday, according to ESPN.com. Head coach Steve Lavin confirmed the suspension, which includes any postseason play and declined to specify the reason.

Harrison, a sophomore, was averaging 17.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for the Red Storm, who are 16-11 on the season and 8-7 in the conference. Harrison has eclipsed 20 points 13 times this year and dropped 36 on Villanova in a 98-86 January loss. Despite his scoring prowess, Harrison only scored 15 and eight points respectively in two of St. John's biggest wins of the season, against the then-ranked No. 14 Cincinnati Bearcats and No. 20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Harrison has flashed a bad temper on the court at times during his St. John's career and received a one-game suspension earlier this year for being 10 minutes late to the team bus during the Charleston Classic, according to the New York Post. "I think he's growing,'' Lavin told the Post at the time. "For a 19-year-old that's not even halfway through his sophomore year, I think he's having an exceptional career. I mean, I'd put his numbers up against anybody in the country that's 19 years old and is less than halfway through their sophomore season. Is there room for him to improve? Absolutely. And that's the good news, because I don't think he's even scratched the surface.''

Harrison was relied on by the Red Storm to replace the output of Moe Harkless, who left the team after his freshman year to enter the NBA draft. Harrison was doing well until this setback. "I had a productive meeting with D'Angelo yesterday," Lavin told ESPN Friday. "He has a bright future in basketball and I'm optimistic his time away from our team will be of value."
