Houston Texans draft rumors: Khalil Mack ahead of Jadeveon Clowney? Vikings' GM compares quarterbacks to disappointing 2011 class [VIDEO]

MMQB.com’s Peter King is always a fountain of rumors and information when it comes to the NFL scene, and now King is reporting that someone close to Texans general manger Rick Smith says Houston prefers Buffalo’s Khalil Mack to South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney.

King believes that the Texans will use the draft’s top pick on a “sure thing” which would eliminate all the quarterback prospects. King has the pick limited to Mack, Clowney and Auburn’s Greg Robinson. The Texans would be better served selecting one of those three to a quarterback considering the reports of most teams cooling on the quarterback class.

A few takeaways from King’s assessment of the draft's top pick include his comparison of this years draft to the 2011 draft that included the Panthers’ Cam Newton and Titans’ Jake Locker. King spoke with Vikings' general manager Rick Spielman who revealed his plan to redshirt their 2014 rookie quarterback no matter who the Vikings select in this draft. He spoke on the lack of a guaranteed guy like Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck.

“There’s no Andrew Luck, no Peyton Manning. It is such a mixed bag with each player—every one of them has positives, every one of them has negatives.”

The 2011 draft comes into play here because most of the top guys were red shirted to an extent, and most of the one’s near the top didn't exactly pan out. Sure, Newton and Colin Kaepernick have ben good for the Panthers and 49ers respectively, but neither is considered an elite player, yet. Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Andy Dalton and Ryan Mallett all have their flaws or are already considered busts looking for their next opportunity. Time will tell who the best of the class ended up being and we will see the status of the lucky team that selected him.

As for Mack, if he is selected by the Texans at number one overall he will become the second straight top pick from the Mid-American Conference behind Central Michigan’s Eric Fisher.
