Yankee’s shortstop and captain, Derek Jeter, continues his farewell from, baseball with the Yankee’s home opener again the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees will very likely honor Jeter properly toward the end of the year, but for his last home opener the Yankees brought in some friends.

The Yankees called in the three retired “Core Four” members to come an honor their long time teammate in Jeter. Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada all met Jeter out on the field and got together for a group picture. Pettitte and Rivera threw out the ceremonial first pitches as Jeter and Posada took behind the plate to catch them.

The “Core Four” was the established framework of Yankees that were home grown and stuck with the Yankees their entire career, with the exception of Pettitte who spent three seasons in Houston to get closer to home. Jeter is the last active member of the group with Rivera and Pettitte retiring last season and Posada retiring the year before.

Jeter is retiring at the end of the 2014 season and, like Rivera, is being honored at all the stadiums he on the schedule. The Yankees are sure to put on a show for the captain when the time is right, but until then Yankee fans are just enjoying the ride.
