After ranking the second-highest in the NFL by allowing 29.9 points per game, the Washington Redskins are looking to fix their secondary, and reports indicate free agent corner Aqib Talib and safety Mike Mitchell will be on the team's radar when they hit the open market on Tuesday.
According to the Washington Post, Talib is on the Redskins' wish list as the highly regarded cornerback is about to hit the free agent market after spending his last two seasons with the New England Patriots.
The report indicates that Talib does have some ties to the Redskins as he played under secondary coach Raheem Morris while he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Redskins general manager Bruce Allen drafted Talib in 2008 when he was with the Bucs as their GM.
Talib, 28, is expecting to net a contract within the $9-10 million per year range, and Washington hoped to sign him last season before he re-upped with the Patriots for a one-year pact. Talib stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 205 pounds. He appeared in 13 games last season for New England and recorded 41 tackles to go along with four interceptions.
Washington is also high on Mitchell, who has played in the league for six years and recorded 66 tackles and four interceptions with the Carolina Panthers last season.
According to the Washington Post, the Redskins began to talk with Mitchell's camp on Saturday when the negotiating window opened up and the team has been in continuous talks with Mitchell's people.
The Redskins are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2013 season that saw quarterback Robert Griffin III deal with a lingering leg injury while also regressing, with the team going 3-13 in 2013 just one year after winning its first division crown since 1999.
It remains to be seen what Washington's moves will be once players are able to sign with other teams at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, but the paper reports that the Redskins plan to be "making a statement at DB" this offseason.
